Subregional Modeling Support – Everglades

Subregional Modeling Support – Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and Acceler8

Interflow supported the mission of South Florida's Interagency Modeling Center (IMC) by providing engineering and scientific peer review services for a variety of hydrologic, hydraulic, and water resources modeling studies for CERP and Acceler8.  Representative reviews have included the following projects:

  • MIKE SHE/ MIKE-11 Modeling of the Big Cypress, Tidal Caloosahatchee, and Estero Bay Watersheds,

  • Pollutant loading and CH3D hydrodynamic/ water quality modeling for the Southwest Florida Feasibility Study (SWFFS),

  • The application of the WASH-123D integrated surface water/ groundwater model to the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project,

  • HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS applications associated with a number of spreader canal, reservoir, and STA projects,

  • EFDC Modeling for the Indian River Lagoon-South Allapattah Natural Water Storage and Treatment Area Restoration Project

  • Peer review of the MODHMS integrated surface water/ groundwater modeling software for use in CERP applications,

  • Groundwater (MODFLOW) and surface water (SWMM) modeling for the Lake Okeechobee Fast Track projects.

The scopes of the reviews included commenting and making recommendations on often complex technical issues related to model development, calibration, application, and documentation.  As a lead reviewer, Mr. Loper's responsibilities also included overall review coordination and delivery of final review documents on time and within budget.  This involved development of model review objectives, review scopes, and schedules in conjunction with the IMC management, the individual CERP and Acceler8 project managers, and the other review panelists.

The IMC is staffed with experts employed by the SFWMD, the USACE, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and other consultants contracted through the SFWMD.  Due to the diverse technical and institutional backgrounds of the review panelists, communication was extremely important.  Organizing and facilitating modeling workshops, developing consensus opinions among the reviewers through frequent meetings and teleconferences, and compiling and editing the draft and final review documents are essential services that Interflow staff has provided to the SFWMD on several occasions.
